Discover Tigrinya

Tigrinya is spoken by the Tigrinya people in the northern Ethiopia and Southern part of Eritrea. Half the people in our country speak Tigrinya making it the most widely spoken language here followed by Tigre at 40 percent and Afar at 4 percent. Surprisingly, many older Eritreans also speak Italian, thanks to our colonization by Italy.

Tigrinya grew from an old language known as Gee ’ez and unlike the Latin alphabet, it has over two hundred characters that symbolize specific sounds. This shows how rich and deep Tigrinya is. While mastering it is no child’s play, speaking it is a musical affair because of the way it is both subtly guttural and rhythmically sublime.
